I'm a slacker!
It's almost time for our next brunch and i haven't posted about the last one, ah well, it's been a busy month..(excuses excuses).
I felt a bit like 'Toast' out here at queen and carlaw...but i thought i'd try to find somewhere that NONE of us have been before. So I picked 'Art Square Café'

I kinda cheated, it was in Now magazines 'ultimate brunch guide' and it starts with 'A' so it's at the top. Hey this is from the girl who picks wine based on how ugly the label is...at least i'll try anything! It's also close to the art gallery and I thought maybe we could hit the Ansel Adams exhibit afterward if we felt like it.
Anyway, Art Square is cute: there's a little gallery at the front. The art wasn't my cup of coffee but we aren't writin' about art here are we? The little creperie in the back seats around 20 is decked out in grass green and lime green and orange...a pretty startling colour combo first thing in the morning, but the black tables and chairs balanced it out a bit. The menu was interesting. It's a Creperie so you pretty much don't have a choice in that department. But the choice of differrent crepes, savoury or sweet, is really interesting. (you can se the menu on their website).
Both Nat and Sue raved about the 'Grilled chicken and mayan dark chocolate" that they had, i'm sure they'll post more detail. In a flash of patriotism i had the 'Canadian Breakfast', it was good but it arrived well after everyone else had finished their breakfast. It could have been the best brunch in the world, but leaving one person sitting there throughout the meal and bringing it that late is pretty inexcusable. Warning: the buckwheat crepe option is insanely filling. But it WAS fun watching nat vehemently tackle her breakfast, determined to finish the last bite.
It's funny though how the service can completely overshadow the food, which is a real shame. Something i've experienced a fair bit around toronto at places that would otherwise be fantastic. I wonder when people will start to understand that when you have a restaurant (or a store, or a business of any kind for that matter) the EXPERIENCE is just as/or often more imortant than the product or service you're providing. I know, i'm ranting off a bit but...We did watch one couple leave without ordering (they had been waiting a long time for anyone to even talk to them). And the large group at the next table (6 people!) seemed to have the opposite problem to our table. One person was served and everyone else got their meal about 15 minutes later, leaving him with a cold breakfast.
On a positive note, the Mayan Hot chocolate is out of this world, it's dark chocolate tinged with a bit of spicy heat.
If they figured out their service, i'd probably go back again (and give the chicken and chocolate a try). But i'm not convinced this isn't a regular occurance.
Joel and i kept the 'brunch' vibe going all day: we went with nat to the Ansel adams exhibit across the road at the ago after (sue had school work, jen had work work). Then nat ran off for a lunch date (my god that woman can eat!). Joel and i killed time with magazines and beer at the rivoli, then Jen met us at the Paramount for a back to back crap movie marathon. I know we're not reviewing movies here either but 'Children of Men' really sucked, so we felt justified sneaking into 'Holiday' so we could lighten up but MAN did that suck too! The vodka from jen's purse didn't lighten the blow at all - just made joel sleepy, seeing as we didn't pay for the second movie it was okay that he snored through the whole thing. Well he did wake up once or twice to sigh, roll his eyes twitch, then go back to sleep.
I really look forward to getting together once a month. 'Bananacake' brunch day has become a real highlight in my calendar. Okay jen....what's next. You or Farhan are going to have to show me that map thing...it smacks of windows though, this mac girl might get a bit overwhelmed.
